I learned so much in this story about Muslim American burial in the U.S., and growing community resistance to it. 🌙 Here are current cemeteries mapped with lawsuits, vandalism or both in America.

Across the country, Muslim groups have faced backlash over building cemeteries. HuffPost has documented more than two dozen incidents where people protested the construction of a Muslim cemetery in states including Illinois, New York and others.

Massachusetts’ first known case of SARS-CoV-2 arrived on January 29. The patient was a university student who had been traveling in Wuhan, China, and was quickly quarantined at home. Despite early vigilance, the disease had started to spread widely in the state by early March. In collaboration with the Broad Institute and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Jacob Lemieux, an infectious disease fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, led a team of dozens of researchers trying to pin down the precise origin and spread of the virus. They performed whole genome sequencing of 772 virus samples from the Boston area, including nearly all cases confirmed during the first week of the epidemic. The data revealed more than 80 introductions into the Boston area, including events that spread the disease far and wide. For Proto Magazine and proto.com

The potential targets are scattered and hidden all over Iran. They range from a uranium mine in the middle of the country to a nuclear power plant on the Gulf coast to a center in the country’s northwestern corner that is doing research on the use of nuclear science in agriculture. There is an underground uranium-enrichment facility about a threehour drive south of Tehran, and centrifuges spin not far from the holy city of Qum and a precision-tools factory that makes them in Mashhad, way over by the Turkmenistan border. These are barely a quarter of two dozen suspected building blocks for the much prophesied nuclear Iran that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calls “an existential threat” to his country. Meteorologists call drought the “creeping disaster” because, unlike hurricanes and tornadoes, droughts normally unfold in slow motion, day after dry day. The “flash drought” of 2012, though, is proving to be anything but a slow burn. From the middle of June to the middle of July, drought gobbled up cropland at an alarming rate, pushing the amount of land under severe drought from 17% to 39% of the continental U.S. Bone-dry weather combined with high temperatures—2012 is on track to become the hottest year on record— sucked the moisture from the air and the soil, toasting America’s breadbasket. This graphic illustrates the U.S. as an outlier: how only 4 countries have removed legal grounds for abortion care since 1994, while 58 countries have liberalized their abortion laws to guarantee greater access to safe and legal abortion services. Nationally, the rates of ADHD diagnoses and medical treatment are on the rise, but the CDC’s map reveals dramatic differences between states, with a prevalence of ADHD diagnosis and drug treatment in the south. Stephen Hinshaw, PhD, vice chair of psychology in the department of psychiatry at the University of California in Berkeley teamed up with Berkeley health economist Richard M. Scheffler PhD, to drill down into the statistics. They found among the factors were education policy changes, school district funding, and poverty classifications under Medicaid. When a truck driver plowed into the throngs of revelers out on the street for Bastille Day in the coastal town of Nice on July 14, 2016, killing at least 84 people and injuring dozens more, it was the latest in a series of devastating attacks in France. The Charlie Hebdo killings, the mayhem in Paris last November, the stabbing of a police officer in June: the list goes on. Among European countries, France has endured some of the worst assaults by jihadists in recent years, underscoring the country’s ongoing problem with homegrown militancy—and its status as a major target.
